Back in A/W 09, when the S/S 10 shows hit the catwalks, it was clear that fashion had looked to sport for inspiration. Having just won the Olympic bid and in the midst of a size zero debate, who could blame designers for looking to the fresh face of sport for a new direction.
If it wasn’t Ashish, with his signature sequins, collaborating with big guns at Nike for a new kind of casual glamour, then it was Topshop Unique, borrowing classic collegiate styles and mixing them with heels and toned thighs for an off duty cheerleader chic. Even Brit classic Jaeger took silk and cut it into sophisticated boxy dresses with over-sized pockets – remixing an uncomplicated utility silhouette for a modern audience.
So that was last year, what’s on the fashion meets sports arena for this summer?
David Koma and Erdem channelled tennis whites with flirty lace and mini-pleats. Peter Pilotto’s wetsuit like contouring was a slithery dream while on the Vauxhall Fashion Scout catwalk, young gun Kristia Robustella presented a playful beachy theme, that was one part sexy life-guide, one part Hawaiian surf-girl. Bring on the summer.
