Somerset House

Somerset House. A place on never-ending wonder. London Fashion Week – check! Outdoor screenings – check! Live gigs – check! Cutting-edge exhibitions – check! Ice skating – check!

Last week the House expanded its glittering rep, commissioning jointly with English National Ballet as part of Big Dance 2010, Shobana Jeyasingh’s Dance Company performed a specially created work, performed in the outdoor fountains.

Water shot skyward rhythmically as women in red and orange dress swept through the water with balletic poise, energy and strong-limbed grace. Neo-classical lifts and weight-bearing was interspersed with powerful unison sections – when working tightly as a team, they appeared almost wave-like, washing over the courtyard.

Sadly my pictures don’t do it justice. I’ve never been that grand a snapper. Speaking to one of Somerset House’s lovely press officers pre show, she hinted that these alfresco dance shows could become something of a regular feature on the seasonal calendar. Bravo to that.
